Winter Ready: Safeguarding Liquid Adhesives from Freezing

Winter weather can challenge the performance of many adhesives, especially standard, non-freeze-grade formulations. At Lanco Adhesives, we’re committed to helping you keep lines running smoothly by staying ahead of temperature-related risks. This season, follow our simple guidelines for ordering, shipping, storage, and inspection to prevent freezing damage and ensure reliable bonding when it matters most.

How freezing affects liquid adhesives?

Viscosity changes: Frozen or near-freezing temperatures can thicken products, making application inconsistent and potentially compromising cure.

Phase separation: water components can separate, leading to uneven bonding.

Substrate performance: Wetting and curing can be impaired after cold exposure, reducing bond strength.

Smart ordering and shipping practices

Ship early in the week: Place purchase orders so products aren’t in transit over weekends, reducing the risk of weekend cold exposure.

To minimize cold exposure, please avoid shipping liquid adhesives over weekends, and schedule shipments for Monday through Thursday.

Storage and handling precautions

Temperature safeguards: Store liquid adhesives at or above 55°F (13°C) and away from open doors, windows, or other cold-influencing factors.

Stock rotation: Rotate stock to minimize long-term cold exposure; label clearly with the date received and recommended storage range.

Inspection and customer-facing reminders

Inspect adhesives upon receipt: to ensure they have not been exposed to freezing temperatures; look for signs of freezing, such as skin, gel-like appearance, or lumps, which indicate compromised product.

Check for cold indicators on the shipment: verify the cold-mark/freeze indicators are within acceptable ranges and have not been triggered.
