Folding Carton Applications Training Best Practices

BEST PRACTICES FOR GENERAL USAGE

  • Keep totes / drums sealed before use

  • Open vent on caps of tote bins when starting to use new tote of material

  • Keep lid on top of container to avoid contamination when in use

  • DO NOT MIX different adhesives. Reservoirs, lines, and pots should be thoroughly flushed with water before changing adhesives. Some adhesive types are completely incompatible with each other, and even a small amount of contamination can cause clumping.

  • If adhesives are to be diluted, have a reproducible dilution method in place, and thoroughly blend the diluted material.

  • Most water-based adhesives are intended to be used at or near room temperature. Low or high temperatures can affect processing properties of the adhesive (viscosity, set speed, for example).

  • Adhesive application equipment and metering devices must be clean and well-maintained. Consistent adhesive application is critical.

BEST PRACTICES FOR HANDLING AND STORAGE

  • Place purchase orders early in the week so that product is not in transit over weekends.

  • Use proper Personal Protective Equipment when handling adhesives.

  • Inspect incoming material to ensure it has not been damaged or frozen in transit.

  • Rotate stock (FIFO). Use oldest material first. Note Best If Used By Date. Adhesives tend to
    separate as they age. In most cases, thorough mixing will return the adhesive to a usable
    form. Check containers for expiration dates.

  • Store adhesives above 10°C. Adhesive emulsions will break at very low temperatures; this
    process is non-reversible (i.e. mixing will not help).

  • Bulk tanks and feed lines should also be flushed and sterilized periodically. Contact your
    adhesive supplier for recommended frequency and procedure for flushing.

  • Double-diaphragm pumps are generally recommended for delivery of emulsion adhesives,
    because they do not create as much shear as gear pumps.
